As A Career Consultant, I’ve guided job seekers through the new era of job seeking. Resumes have shifted in style, interviewing is mostly done online and applying is no longer in person, in fact the year 2020 have thought us that the future workspace will be less physical and more digital. During the lockdown, work was virtual, from recruitment to onboarding, new hires learnt on the job online.
Below are a few steps on how to land your dream job applying digitally in a sea of rough waters.
UPSKILL: The need for upskilling cannot be overemphasized, as you know staying up to date with your industry and learning new skills could help you move forward in your career and make you valuable in the job markets, gone are the days when employers are looking for who can get the job done, now they are looking for can do more than the job.
Automation and the digital transformation of many workplaces mean that YOU have to keep up with a rapid pace of change. “The world is changing constantly and it is vital to stay informed of the latest trends and sought-after skills in their industry,” says Nicole Gorton
CUSTOMISE EACH APPLICATION: Each online job application needs to be customized to the job advertised. Failure to understand the requirements needed will result in your application landing in the dreaded “black hole.”
It is important to pay attention to each job application as the job process for JOB A might be different for JOB B. Draft a separate cover letter for each application.
CREATE AN ACHIEVEMENT-BASED RESUME’/CV: The need for a convincing and good resume cannot be over discussed in a conference where job application and career transition are the themes. A resume is a vital part of your job application if not the most important! It is the door to your career dreams, developments and advancements. Having a good detailed, and achievement-oriented CV is showing a hiring manager that you are better candidates with the required potentials to get the job done more than your competitors. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CV!. The dynamics of resume have changed over the years, some details are now considered irrelevant, but in all the adjustments in your CV, let the job description be your guide, and what is required in your industry. This is because what is considered irrelevant in the private sector is key information in government parastatals and even NGOs. You have to keep tweaking to fix the industry where your application is going.
NB: Your resume only needs to highlight the last 10 to 18 years of your work history. Focus on both quantitative and qualitative results. Remember to add in your core area of expertise, tech skills, a highlighted achievement for seasoned professionals….
