How To Fix Your Numerous Years of Experience On Your Resume

How To Fix Your Numerous Years of Experience On Your Resume

The Employment History or Professional Experience is another most important section of your resume, it is the most crucial component of your whole job application. This is where most applicants make a wide range of errors. A lengthy resume isnt always best although you may have a long and accomplished career they have to be streamlined to match your career path in a concise manner and here is how!!!

Let the Job opening be your guide.
A resume is not the same for everyone and the work history is not the same for all candidates. While it is okay to briefly tell your 10 years of work experience on your resume, for a senior-level managerial role it is not ideal for middle-level or fresh graduates. But regardless of the level of candidacy, endeavor to only list the Relevant work history that are necessary for your chosen career path or application

Employment history is written in a reverse chronological order/ descending order from most recent to older years experience.

Make each entry clear and legible (preferably in this format)
Your Job Title
Company Name and Location
Dates
Milestones/Key Achievement/ Promotion (If any)

If you have a standard 5 years paid work experience you should not add your volunteer experience or intern service on your professional experience they can be added to the Additional Section” of your resume.

Use up to 5 descriptions/duties/responsibilities highlighted with bullets points. You should focus on your quantifiable achievement, not just duties and responsibilities also note that your current job should have the most bullets points but as you go back, limit the number of job descriptions/duties/responsibilities and focus on your verifiable achievement.

Use Action Verb
Specific tasks should be highlighted using Action verbs especially at the start of each bullet point.example: managed, planned.

Specifically for those with 15-20years experience. Focus on your most recent 15 years of work experience and as previously stated. The amount of detail should reduce as you go back in your career history.

Also in addition to having a professional summary and areas of expertise. Include a career highlights section on the first page with 3-5 bullets points that shows off the headliners from your 20 years work history as they are relevant to the job you are pursuing today

In conclusion, Your resume is not your transcript from the school where every single detail of your past experience is relevant! It is your marketing document. You get to curate the content you provide which means determining what details you want to share and what details you want to downplay or leave out because they arent relevant to your goals.
